Defensoria Q´eqchi´ aims to strengthen the justice system, by monitoring the formal legal system, influencing public opinion and policy at local and regional levels with respect to the right to justice, the formation of legal interpreters (Q´eqchi´- Spanish), and strengthening the councils of elders in rural communities, especially in resolution of conflicts and development of alternative practices based on tradition. Objectives · Improve the access of the Maya Q´eqchi´ population of El Estor to justice in compliance with the Peace Accords, Agreement 169 of the ILO, and the recommendations of Commision on Historical Clarification. · Strengthen the participation and recognition of the Constitutional and Legal Rights of the Q´eqchi´ community. · Monitor the local and regional authorities and juridicial respect for Human Rights. · Develop mechanisms for assuring indigenous women access to justice. · Strengthen the ability of the elders of indigenous communities to take decisions and to appeal to the accord on constitutional justice. · Promote equality, harmony and reconciliation between the people of El Estor and the rest of Guatemala.
